Goal Setting

Olweus Responses from Mrs. Moore’s ACE

Why is it important to set goals?
  • It is important to set goals because then you can try to achieve the goal.
  • It is important to set goals because it gives you the chance to do something that you want to do.
  • It is important to set goals because then you have something to strive for. If you have high goals for yourself you can accomplish more. Also, if you have goals set, you will work harder towards it.
  • Setting goals is important because if you set goals, it will break work into smaller parts.

Why are team goals important?
  • You can make bigger goals because there are more people.
  • With team goals many people are striving for the same thing, but in personal goals only one person is striving for the goal.
  • In a group you work together and when you work together you can achieve higher goals and harder goals.

how does team goals drive individual goals?
  • Your team goals drive individual goals by maybe inspiring you to achieve your individual goals.
  • Your team goals drive your individual goals by having someone work with you and help you reach your goals.
  • Team goals drive your individual goals because the team goal could be part of your individual goal  and since you have already done part of your individual goal you want to do the rest.
  • Team goals drive my individual goals because my teammates encourage me to try harder for my own goals.

How might team goals conflict with individual goals?
  • My individual goals might conflict with the team goals because to reach my goals, I may need to practice them so I might have to miss out on something with the team. Or, team goals might be different than mine, and that might be a conflict because the team is working towards theirs.
  • Your individual goals have a conflict with team goals because your individual goal is what you want to achieve and team goals are goals for the whole team.
  • Team goals may conflict with individual goals because everyone may not agree with the goal they are trying to achieve.
  • Your individual goals may conflict with the team goals because if your goal is to bad, unkind, and disruptive but everyone elses’ goal is to listen and be quiet then the goals could interfere in a bad way.

Unit 3 Perseverance

We have begun our investigation of perseverance in English Language Arts. Our essential question this quarter is, "How does the setting allow characters to persevere?".  Students are currently reading Fever 1793, which follows the life of Mattie, a teenage girl, who lives in Philadelphia during an outbreak of yellow fever.  Students are annotating, highlighting, and creating footnotes in their novels.  Each week students are completing an Grab Bag that resembles the ELA PARCC test which they will be taking March 2nd-4th.

Quarter 3 Math Update

Students are finishing the unit on algebraic skills and will take the quiz on topic 13 next week. We are preparing for the first half of the new Common Core state assessment called PARCC. The first series of testing contains problem based questions, which means the problems relate more to the real world, have multiple steps and some of the questions will require students to write responses similar to the old short and long response style questions. This portion will have two sections one with a calculator and one without, so we will test on two days. The testing program is electronic and will have tools which are similar to the tools in the digits program. We will have the protractor and ruler, calculator when allowed, as well as an evidence sheet with measurement conversions and area formulas. The students have practiced for this during class and since we have used technology all year they are familiar with the style of questions and tools - it is very similar to our practice homework. If you would like to see the style of questions your student can show you the link to the practice PARCC using my Schoology page.

Weather

Weather affects what you wear, what you do every day, and even how you get from place to place.  But do you know why it rains in some parts of the US more than others?  Or why one year we have 10 snow days and none the next?  How would weather scientists describe the patterns of weather that we experience every year?  This month we are going to be analyzing weather, climate, and factors that affect weather and climate through the eyes of meteorologists who study the Earth's weather and atmosphere.
